Sharjah Cup 2002 Pakistan v Sri Lanka

The annual four-nation cricket tournament takes place at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in April, the stadium is the only venue in the Middle East hosting International cricket. The stadium is also used for league matches and international tournaments hosted throughout the year by the Sharjah Cricket Council and the CBFS (Cricketers Benefit Fund Scheme).

Sharjah did not have any orgainsed cricket prior to 1981, though the largest population of the United Arab Emirates is from the Indian-subcontinent. At that time, Abdul Rahman Bukhatir decided to bring the game to the UAE, after being addicted to the game whilst he was a student in Pakistan, so he raised enough money to build a stadium large enough to hold 12 thousand spectators. The stadium was to accomodate one-day tournaments organized by the Cricketers Benefit Fund Scheme, which took proceeds of the matches to benefit retired cricketers world-wide. In April 1984, Bukhatir's dream came true as the stadium hosted matches of the Asia Cup. In1994, the UAE cricket team joined the competitions and earned a place in the 1996 cricket World Cup.
